Good oral health starts with daily habits. Here are our top tips for keeping your teeth and gums healthy between dental visits.
1. Brush Twice Daily
Brush your teeth for at least two minutes, twice a day. Use a fluoride toothpaste and a soft-bristled brush.
2. Don't Forget to Floss
Brushing only cleans about 60% of your tooth surfaces. Flossing or using interdental brushes reaches the areas your toothbrush can't.
3. Limit Sugary Foods and Drinks
Sugar feeds the bacteria that cause tooth decay. Try to limit sugary snacks and drinks, especially between meals.
4. Wait Before Brushing After Eating
If you've eaten something acidic, wait 30 minutes before brushing. Acid softens your enamel temporarily, and brushing too soon can cause damage.
5. Stay Hydrated
Water helps wash away food particles and keeps your mouth moist. Dry mouth can increase your risk of decay and gum disease.
6. Replace Your Toothbrush Regularly
Change your toothbrush (or electric brush head) every 3-4 months, or sooner if the bristles are frayed.
7. Consider Mouthwash
An antibacterial mouthwash can help reduce plaque and freshen breath, but it's not a substitute for brushing and flossing.
8. Don't Ignore Bleeding Gums
Bleeding gums can be a sign of gum disease. If your gums bleed when you brush, book a check-up with us.
9. Protect Your Teeth During Sports
If you play contact sports, consider a custom-made mouthguard to protect your teeth from injury.
10. Visit Your Dentist Regularly
Regular check-ups allow us to spot problems early, when they're easier to treat. Most people should visit every 6-12 months.
